Safety handrail needed at Upper Childrey Way East Challow

Reported via desktop in the Footways and Pavement damage category anonymously at 15:39, Thursday 9 July 2026

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

I often use the Upper Childrey Way Path. which runs from Sarajac Avenue, across Vicarage Hill continuing behind the former Goodlake Pub. I am finding it increasingly difficult and dangerous as I am quite elderly. There is a handrail on the Wantage side of Vicarage Hill at the back of the Goodlake enabling safe crossing over what is now a very dangerous and increasingly busy road (Vicarage Hill) but not a hand rail on the side going away from the Wantage direction. Upper Childrey Way drops directly onto the road which I am sure you agree is very dangerous particularly with nothing to hold onto. The lane is also frequently used by school children both at the primary school and the secondary school. At some point there has been a rail as there are stumps in the concrete. In the interest of safety, I am sure a rail would benefit all those who use it. I look forward to hearing from you

  • The photos are looking from both directions to and from the road and as you can see it drops directly onto the road. This road is used more frequently now with the vehicles passing very tight to the steps, often at speed, with no consideration for pedestrians. The path has an uneven steep drop. If you look carefully, you can see concrete either side of the steps with what appear to be metal stumps, presumably some kind of handrail
