A series of potholes and crumbling tarmac across the side of the carriageway in the direction going towards Oxford.

Reported via desktop in the Pothole category anonymously at 16:55, Monday 2 February 2026

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

These defects in the tarmac surface have been getting worse over a period of months but have deteriorated rapidly after the recent wet and freezing weather. The road from Beckley to Horton-cum-Studley including Woodperry Hill and the Straight Mile was closed for resurfacing a few years ago but proper attention was not paid to the drainage at the time. After heavy rain, runoff from the surrounding fields and woodland flows across the road surface repeatedly from one side to the other causing the tarmac to become saturated with water down to the level of the previous road surface since the new surface was laid directly onto the old tarmac. In freezing conditions, ice formation under the road surface then lifts off large sections of the new surface causing it to crumble and break up resulting in widespread potholes. This problem will only be cured by the provision of proper surface water drainage on both sides of the road down the whole length of Woodperry Hill. Patching the current holes will at best only be a temporary solution.
