New hump at entrance of Iffley Turn
Reported via desktop in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 13:25, Wednesday 7 January 2026
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later
This - either through poor design or bad construction - is not smooth with either a deliberate or accidental dip on the Iffley side in particular - more than the 1:8 slope normally specified. Exhausts on several varieties of cars catch on the hump when crossing very slowly indeed. This is damaging cars. More importantly cyclists increase speed coming down the hill (gravity and slope assisted) and are not fully aware of cars in the dark turning left as cars behind them obscured the turning vehicle. This has actually increased the danger to cyclists. Two very near accidents witnessed in recent weeks.

Thank you for your request. I can confirm that on review of the implemented work at Iffley Turn, remedial works are required to reduce the impact of the ramp gradients on vehicles that pass over that particularly side road entry treatment and those works will be completed shortly. This junction, along with all the other junctions treated with similar works under this Safer Roads Fund project, will be subjected to a post completion Road Safety Audit Stage 3 assessment which is undertaken by auditors independent to the scheme designers. This RSA 3 has been instructed, the site visits by the audit team are scheduled for early February 2026 and will be followed by the required reporting. Ongoing monitoring of the implemented works will also continue and any measures for improvement that are identified as being required, either via this monitoring or the above mentioned RSA 3, will be considered for action. A further Road Safety Audit Stage 4 (RSA 4) one year on from completion of the works will also be required and this will be scheduled for November 2026.
