The road under the bridge

Reported via desktop in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 16:42, Monday 27 October 2025

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The road is falling apart, completely uneven, varying depths of holes on the road, and a lot of holes /potholes. There whole stretch under the bridge is affected, and stretching beyond either side. It is dangerous to drive on, but especially to walk or cycle through as it is also dark, so you can't see the holes in the ground or try to spot the even sections of road, so tripping and crashing are real possibilities. It's been at least a year, I believe there was an attempt at a repair last year, but it was poor and did not last longer than a couple of weeks.

  • Your email respnse stated "Based on our assessment, the highlighted area does not currently meet the criteria for immediate intervention under our Highway Safety Inspection Policy. " However in response to complaints made on the 27th February, 15th April the 18th and 29th August 2025, in response to the same complaints you said "the issue warrants attention within 28 days". This didn't happen, no repairs have happened this year, I suggest you ask for a refund from your road surface provider. On the 12th May 2025 your response was "the road will be inspected this month and anything at inspection level will be rapired". Your website stated Risk factors to consider on roads include: "The size of the pothole , The location of the pothole - for example, if it is in the wheel track, cycle path on a junction, or bend, The speed of the road". These potholes meet all 3 risk factors, they are numerous and large, they are across the road, a hazard for walkers, cyclists and cars, and its in the dark, and I think the road is 40mph. Can you share the inspection report please? There have also been complaints made about the exact same issue in 2025 on the 27th January (including flooding due to poor drainage under the bridge), 12th February, 19th April, 25th May, and my complaint on the 27th November 2025. But we all had different responses, why have some complaints been told the issue needs urgent repair, within 28days and others are told this "does not currently meet the criteria for immediate intervention under our Highway Safety Inspection Policy." Therefore: 1) Please share and explain why this issue does not meet the criteria for immediate intervention under our Highway Safety Inspection Policy. 2) Pleaase share when the repairs were carried out as per your comments on the 27th February, 15th April, 18th August and 29th August, and what was done at each repair. 3) Please also explain how not fixing the issues with this broken road surface, and the poor drainage, which means it floods a lot, and keeping this section of road unlit, thus all these dangers are lurking in the dark. Please tell me how this fits in to the consultation that you did for speed limits in Cholsey earlier this year, which were lowered to encourage people to walk and cycle safely around Cholsey. How does this support the active transport work in Cholsey?
