Flags on lamp posts

Reported via mobile in the Other category anonymously at 09:17, Friday 3 October 2025

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council and South Oxfordshire District Council less than a minute later

Some Union Jack flags have been erected on lampposts at this busy double roundabout junction. They are a distraction and create potential hazard to road users. This is a busy junction with articulated lorries often doing difficult manoeuvres on to deliver to a Tesco Express there so all road users need to be particularly attentive. There is also an island crossing on the junction used by school children for the local primary and secondary schools (as it’s just opposite the main village bus stop). We had a death in a road traffic collision in the village at the weekend which heightens the awareness for and importance of road user safety.

  • The flags are still in place and I assume have no official permission to be put up. They represent a clear distraction when driving close to the dual roundabouts, even more so at the busy school finishing times. Also in the current climate, as they are not do any official commemoration, they could be considered offensive.

  • The flags are still in place. I am sure that you are aware that the flags are being put up around the country by groups of people who claim they are for patriotic reasons. However, as evidenced by other views made by the same people, they are clearly meant to intimidate non-white residents in the country sending a message that they wish us gone. They did not ask permission to put them up, so there should be nothing to prevent them being taken down. Please could you arrange to remove them asap as they are deeply distressing to those of us they are aimed at. I support the flag being hung proudly to mark important events and waved to support national sports teams but this use is not respectful to the flag or its many and varied people.

  • The flags are still up. Please can we have an update on when they will be removed as they are distracting to drivers and are distressing (given their presumed intention)

  • The flags had been accompanied by peace and other flags, but overnight someone had ripped these down and put up additional Union Jack and St George’s flags. The intention of this act is fairly clear. It’s really upsetting and I’m asking again that the council remove all of the flags as soon as possible. It has been over 2 weeks since this was first reported - please can this be actioned now?

  • They're still there. Please take them down. I second the reasons that were posted at 13:09, Friday 3 October 2025.

  • This is honestly ridiculous at this point - what are you actually doing about it? Why even bother paying our council tax if you don’t fix problems that residents raise?
