Traffic lights fitted in middle of cycle lane

Reported via desktop in the Potholes and maintenance category anonymously at 19:14, Fri 26 September 2025

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

A set of traffic lights for a pedestrian crossing have been installed right in the middle of the cycle lane here. Thus blocking the cycle lane and causing potential danger. It has been like this since they were installed months ago and nothing has been done except for two signs instructing cyclists to dismount. These are repeatedly lying face down and have become damaged. Please could this issue be fixed without further delay.

  • Thank you for your enquiry. We are aware of the issue concerning the configuration of the controlled crossing along the newly constructed section of the Benson Relief Road. We have raised this with the Developer and are actively working with them to resolve the matter in a practical and positive way. The Developer has engaged with us and has produced revised plans showing the intended layout of the crossing. To clarify, the signal poles and tactile paving will be relocated to the footway to ensure an uninterrupted route for cyclists.

We have been chasing the Developer for confirmation on when these works will be implemented and have stressed the need for this to be treated as a priority to ensure the safety of all users. Unfortunately, correspondence from their side has recently been limited.

Given that this section of the road is open and considering the safety concerns raised, we previously instructed the Developer to temporarily close this section of the cycleway at the controlled crossing using appropriate signage and barriers. This is to maintain cyclist safety until the reconfiguration works are completed. We will follow up with them regarding the damaged signage currently lying on the ground so this can be addressed promptly.

Please be assured that we are doing all we can to push for these works to be completed as soon as possible. Should the lack of communication persist, we will escalate the matter to senior management to avoid any further delays.

  • Thank you for the update. Each time someone stands the signs up, they are lying flat within hours. Even when it's not windy.

I trust the developer will be covering the full cost of remedial works.

  • I contacted the developer about this and they have responded saying:

"The issue with the location of the traffic lights has been looked into, the signalised crossing was constructed to drawings approved by the OCC.

During construction our site team queried the arrangement with the OCC and were told to proceed in line with the drawing.

However, having received negative feedback from neighbours, the OCC is seeking to amend the crossing."

Please could you provide your commentary on this?

This should be pretty easy to resolve by looking at the drawings.

  • Thanks for fixing permanent signs to the lights. Please could the temporary signs now be removed.
