No lights on footpath

The footpath that runs between the Oxford Rd and Crown Rd(,behind Exeter Hall) has no lighting to illuminate the footpath. Public footpaths should be well lit, as this enhances safety and security for users particularly during night time or dimly lit areas. The path should be well lit to deter crime and anti social behaviour, making users feel more secure and comfortable while walking ,instead of fearing for their safety. Lighting also helps users to see obstacles, uneven surfaces and potential hazards reducing the risks of falls., also making it difficult for criminals to operate unseen, potentially reducing instances of theft, assault or vandalism.. A young woman was subjected to a sexual assault a few years ago whilst walking down this footpath, and more recently there was another incident on the footpath which the police are aware off. The overgrown hedges, which are at least 12 feet now, and poor lighting is causing concern for the public safety, it really does need addressing before any other incident occurs...

Thank you for the report. Oxfordshire County Councils streetligfhting budget is consumed by the maintenance and operating of existing streetlight assets. There is no current budget to install additional lighting within the county.

I received a reply from yourselves saying there was no money to invest in new lighting. I have noted your reply and if any incidents of sexual assault or kidnapping should occur again this will be due to the lack of care, and will be taken further. Seemingly cost comes before public safety. The footpath is well used giving access to the Dr's surgery of all ages .School children use it regularly and the footpath is dark by 4pm in the winter months. I have raised my concerns with you and politely ask you to reconsider this, before anything of a serious nature takes place again.
