Flooding next to new development of warehouses on Rycote Kane (A329)

Reported via mobile in the Flooding on Road category anonymously at 11:39, Thu 5 December 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The road was resurfaced by developers of the new industrial units and warehouses on Rycote lane. There is now flooding on the southbound carriageway after medium to heavy rainfall which is dangerous for traffic.

  • Every time it rains this piece of road now floods. You need to be an airline pilot and drive down the centre of the road. The existing drains were clearly damaged when the road was changed for the new industrial estate a few years ago!

  • This flooding is getting worse. The road surface is damaged. There will be another accident soon.

  • Yet again the flooding after it has rained makes this so dangerous. I thought you were looking at the drains. The problem all started when the new development was built. Again you have to swerve across the road to avoid the excess flooding.

  • There continues to be flooding on Rycote Lane. I have lived in this area for over 20 years and use this route on almost a daily basis. There was NEVER flooding until the warehouses were developed on Rycote Lane and as part of the scheme the road was widened. The Developers should be held to account and required to rectify this issue before a serious accident occurs.

  • This problem does not appear to have been addressed by OCC yet, who I believe are responsible for maintaining the roadside ditches, including creating 'grips' in the adopted verges to take surface water off the road. I also noted whilst walking along the public footpath on the golf course yesterday that there is a blocked culvert under Rycote Lane at Manor Farm Cottages through which a stream flows northwards from the golf course towards North Weston - the ditch on the south side of Rycote Lane also flows into this but backs up due to the blockage and thereby exacerbates the flooding problem on the road.

In addition I observed that surface water run-off water from the golf course flows directly into the roadside ditch, which shouldn't be happening as it is not intended for this purpose and as a result this overwhelms the ditch in times of heavy rainfall.

I therefore think lack of ditch maintenance by OCC, including the blocked culvert, is the main problem here actually, rather than the widening and other improvement works to Rycote Lane undertaken as part of the new warehouse development being the cause.
