West St Helen street/ High street junction needs new traffic light system or at least a box junction to enable cars to get into High street

Reported via desktop in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 13:16, Thu 21 November 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

I have written about this before, a couple of years ago, to request that something is done to enable cars to get out into the High street from West St Helen street. This is particularly bad in rush hour(s) school run times, but can be any day or time. The fact is that where I live ( Neave News) car drivers do not have right of way into West St Helen St OR the High street in Abingdon It therefore takes an inordinate amount of time to get into the High street and onward journey. The response I received before ( when I was dealing with my daughter’s terminal illness) did not address the problem at all. I did not feel able to respond at the time, but was very frustrated. It stated that the situation had been checked and that “When 3 vehicles are queuing in West St Helen Street, this triggers the pedestrian crossing in the High street, and cars from W St H st can therefore move into the High street”. This is NOT true at all when any traffic has built up in town, since vehicle drivers are ALREADY stationary in both lanes of the High st, blocking the way for access by anyone in W st H st! The drivers in High street are waiting for the Stratton Way lights to change for THEIR onward journey. It is absolutely ridiculous that this has remained such a problem for many years. I don’t know where all the traffic is coming from in W St H street, as it is not just local traffic from this area. Please could someone really look into this traffic problem urgently and thoroughly, and come up with a solution that will help the flow of traffic & enable residents of nearby houses to get out of town without having to rely on other drivers to let them out. Thank you. Coral Paphitis

  • 100%agree. I have experienced this as a local driver. A well reasoned submission and what sounds like a cheap (cost effective) sensible proportionate suggestion. Chris Nelson

  • I completely agree with this. The traffic lights at Stratton Way need changing too as they cause the high st traffic to back up. Or yellow hatching for a large area where the cars are trying to get out, would mean cars on high st might let someone out.
