Urgent Request: Removal of Lamppost at 9 Westfield Road, Long Wittenham

Reported via desktop in the Other Lighting Issue category anonymously at 17:42, Sunday 22 September 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

Dear Oxfordshire Council,

I am writing to express my urgent concern regarding the lamppost located at 9 Westfield Road, Long Wittenham. Due to its placement, it poses a significant safety hazard and causes considerable inconvenience to residents and visitors.

Over the past 6 months, we have unfortunately witnessed three incidents where visitors have accidentally scraped their cars on the lamppost. This is a clear indication of the lamppost's unsafe position. The proximity of the lamppost to the garage entrance makes it extremely difficult for residents and guests to park their vehicles without the risk of damage. This situation has led to considerable frustration and inconvenience.

I kindly request that the Oxfordshire Council consider relocating the lamppost to a more suitable location. Doing so would not only eliminate the safety hazard but also improve the overall accessibility and convenience of our property.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

James Fitzpatrick

Updates

  • Dear Mr Fitzpatrick This unit has been in place since the development was built many years ago and while less than perhaps ideally placed it has stood the test of time in that position. However if you wish i can let you have a quotation to reposition the lamp column possibly to your boundary with the next door property but I would need to discuss with them. If you wish to proceed on that basis please let me have your email and I'll send you the cost details etc. Thanks.

  • Morning,

Thank you for your prompt response regarding the lamp column.

While I appreciate that the lamp column has been in its current location for many years, I believe that it is still a safety hazard and should be relocated. The fact that it has been there for so long does not diminish its potential risks, especially given the changes in the neighbourhood over time.

As a long-standing resident who has contributed to the local community through taxes for over two decades, I believe that the council should be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents. I would expect them to take the initiative in addressing any potential hazards, such as the lamp column's placement.

I would appreciate it if you could provide me with more information regarding the council's policies and procedures for addressing such issues. As I'm certain you're also aware that regulations change each year so your comment saying its "stood the test of time" is ridiculous and would be more applicable to a tree or natural structure not a lamp post poorly placed in the 70's. Additionally, please let me know if there are any alternative solutions or options available to resolve this matter before I begin proceedings of taking this to my legal team.

Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

    Sincerely, Mr. Fitzpatrick

  • Dear Mr Fitzpatrick I'm sorry that you don't agree with our procedure that has been well established for many years that any lamp column request by an individual householder for it to be repositioned for whatever reason is considered and in most cases facilitated but it's always at the expense of the requester and not from the public purse. I can only reiterate that if you let me have appropriate contact details I will then send you the cost details and if you wish to proceed we can go from there, thanks.
