Grass verges in Chimney not cut today by contractors

Reported via mobile in the Grass category anonymously at 21:00, Wednesday 3 July 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later

The overgrown grass verges from the Nature reserve car Park to Chimney we’re not cut today by the contractors who cut the verges from Aston down as far as the car park. It seems likely due to the Nature reserve putting a sign up saying ‘no grass cutting, nature reserve’. As I understand it the grass verges form part of the highway and are therefore maintained by OCC with an annual cut. Several of the residents are concerned that the verges were not cut today as the single track road has poor visibility especially for smaller cars. The road has a bit of a bend on it which also makes it harder to see the oncoming traffic. The single track road is also used heavily by walkers who park in the nature reserve car park and walk along the lane to access the nature reserve at the end of the lane on the bend by the Chimney sign. It is proving difficult to see pedestrian walkers, their dogs off the leads and children as the grass is considerably overgrown. As a narrow single track road this is a constant concern for local residents driving to and from the hamlet. Also there are only a couple of places one can pass on the way from the car park to the hamlet. Since it’s hard to see oncoming traffic due to the overgrown hedge , vehicles have to regularly reverse long distances back to passing places. In the winter when the verges are lower you can see vehicles much further out and therefore it’s easier to anticipate needing to wait at a passing place. Whilst we appreciate the desire to conserve nature, the residents feel that public safety needs to take priority and since the verges are highway’s property, we’d ask that the contractor returns to cut the verges asap. Many thanks

  • The grass verges still haven’t been cut but despite reporting it at the beginning of July. I note that contractors were back in the area cutting the Great Brook Road in the past week and didn’t come down and do our verges. Please can the council advise when there verges are going to be cut as it is a safety issue for numerous walkers visiting the nature reserve and drivers coming to and from the hamlet.
