Traffic Light Sequencing Highways 'claim' that there are no issues with the sequencing of the lights at this junction, yet at 11.30am last Sunday morning the traffic on approach to these lights southbound along the Eastern By Pass build back through its intersection with Horspath Driftway, this a distance of over 600 meters, or more than one third of a mile. Yet there was NO traffic tailing back from these lights in ANY other direction, bar those trying to join the by-pass by turning right from Horsepath Driftway heading southbound. There was NO traffic build up once through these lights all the way to the A34, so OBVIOUSLY it's the lights that are creating the congestion here. The 'primary' purpose of traffic control by light signals is to separate conflicting traffic by the division of time, within the available road space, in a safe, efficient and equitable manner. The lights at 'this' location are 'not' sequenced to: seperate traffic efficiently, nor equitably given the evidence highlighted above, in fact the exact opposite in this case, by doing so creating unnecessary congestion.

Thank you for your recent report. For safety reasons, we try and prevent queuing vehicles in the right turn lane into Horspath Rd from reaching back into lane 2 of the high speed Northbound approach.
This is the main reason why queues do form on the southbound approach during busy periods of the day.
An Engineer has again checked the operation of the junction and confirmed that they are working correctly and without any current faults.
We will continue to monitor the site but believe the current signal timings to be the best achievable at this location without potentially reducing safety.
