Dip in road after pothole repair pooling water and spraying onto property wall

Reported via mobile in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 14:05, Mon 1 July 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 37 minutes later

A recurring pool of rainwater in the road is causing water to be sprayed onto our front perimeter wall and garden by passing cars. This is causing the wall and patio area to be persistently damp and undermine their structural integrity.

This was raised for several months and was recently closed down by Oxfordshire county council.

The issue relates to a previous pothole repair which has left a significant dip in the road which pools water after every rainfall. If this was smoothed over it would allow water to adequately reach the drainage and prevent further splashing on to our perimeter road.

  • Small amounts of rainfall (now in July 2024) are causing the issue to reoccur.

  • This issue was first raised to Oxfordshire County Council in December 2022 under ENQ22940919. This was resolved pending wider road repairs, but these did not fully remove the underlying issue and this was re-raised to the council in March 2024 under ENQ24996649. In late June 2024 this was closed citing wider 'ground water saturation' issues and the rationale that once rainfall levels return to normal levels this issue will be resolved. It is clear from the minimal rain we have had overnight Thursday 4th > Friday 5th July that this issue is not stemming from wider ground water saturation, but rather the long-existing dip in the road that requires smoothing over to allow proper drainage flow.

  • Recent heavy rain has exacerbated the issue and is causing significant damage to our front perimeter wall as well as regularly spraying our front garden with water. Please will the County Council provide an update since the last message that this issue was under investigation 3 months ago as the problem has been on place since December 2022.

  • Please note from latest photo the damp right hand side of the wall (contrasted with the dry left hand) where water is regularly being thrown from passing traffic. The wall here is coated in moss and there is a significant amount of weed growing at the base of the wall due to all the water - all of which are contributing to the gradual deterioration of the wall.

  • Recent rainfall and drop in temperatures has left external wall damp for extended period. Concerns if dip in road is left unattended much longer this will result in permanent damage to wall. Please provide an update as a matter of urgency.
