Hedges overgrowing shared use path along canal

Reported via mobile in the Hedges category anonymously at 17:21, Fri 28 June 2024

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

Seems like some of the grass verges have been recently cut. However, hedges along the canal path still growing over the canal path. As the path is below minimum width for a two way shared use path to begin with, that causes big problem for passing oncoming traffic or overtaking.

Council ref: ENQ241009400

Updates

  • State changed to: Investigating

Updated by Oxfordshire County Council at 17:21, Fri 28 June 2024

  • Change status to URGENT: Passing oncoming traffic is now basically impossible without stopping and leaning into the bushes for large parts of the path.

  • Each time it's been cut over the last few years, it's been barely enough to uncover the path, so it quickly becomes overgrown again. I understand that the council (or is it the Canal & River Trust?) can only afford to cut this twice a year, but given that, I'd expecte them to cut it *further back from the path*, so that there's more room for it to grow before it becomes a problem again.

  • To cut back further is probably a sensible proposal, but frankly if a road was overgrown like that nobody would come up with the excuse "we can only afford to cut back overgrow twice a year". I don't care how the council solves the problem, this is a major commuter route in and out of Oxford and the current state is simply not acceptable. If the council is serious about wanting to increase cycling, then this path into the "cycling city" Oxford needs to be maintained.
