Unnecessary mowing of wild flowers

The triangle at the top of Boddington Lane has in past years had a wonderful display of MEADOW CRANESBILL, a favourite of pollenating bees and other insects. There is no traffic visibility issue here but the patch gets cut down before these can flower, and one year recently when they were in full bloom. Despite the unfortunate planting of daffodils the plants are still there. This species flowers from June to August, so might still show something this year if left alone. In future years please don't mow this lovely patch (apart perhaps from a narrow strip alongside the footpath and road) until the cranesbill has flowered and seeded. Perhaps it will then be restored to its former glory.

Thank you for your report. Landowners and occupiers are legally obligated to properly maintain vegetation on their property that is next to the public highway. If the vegetation affects the safety of highway users, it becomes their responsibility. However, in this instance, since the highway was not obstructed, there may not be sufficient cause to take further action at this time. We will continue to monitor the situation during statutory inspections.
