Persistent leak in Oxford Road A4183, Abingdon
Water has been leaking up through the road for the last six years and the cause has been identified but no effective action taken.
British Telecom were working on both sides of the road recently and had had to pump out the chamber by the South Avenue bus stop (northbound). I explained that in times of heavy rainfall the water comes up through the BT manhole covers and they said that the ducts that carry the cables also act as the drainage system for the service. They suggested that the BT ducts are blocked, as had happened below the chamber they had had to pump out. The duct need clearing of the blockage.
It is pointless patching the road, all this does is cause the water to come up through the next section of tarmac as can be seen in the accompanying photographs. Unless the problem is properly cured there is little point in tar and chipping the road service to waterproof it as the water will still come up under the surface coating.
This problem and its cause has been reported many times.
