Please can the traffic light sequence be altered to allow more efficient flow of traffic down Headley Way at peak traffic times?

Reported via mobile anonymously at 16:30, Thu 29 February 2024

Sent to Oxford City Council and Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later

The change from roundabouts to traffic lights a few years ago has not effectively helped with the flow of traffic. It backs up onto the JR site which means buses and cars are delayed even more. Often, after the traffic lights at the bottom of Headley Way, the bus can move on and is fine until Summertown. We see an open road ahead of us daily. It’s frustrating that the heaviest route is not acknowledged. Please can this be resolved? It might help traffic in other areas of Oxford.

  • Thank you for contacting Oxfordshire CC Traffic Signals, Ref: F417 – Cherwell Drive, Marsh Lane, Oxford.

The junction operates with a duel Stream Setup. We cannot add more additional green time in the PM peak as junction has proved to be troublesome to link the two streams together due to the current stage and phase arrangement. There was a further issue that we found it very hard to maintain the green on the outbound phase due to the giveway at Copse Lane and the bus stop south of the junction southbound.

We are currently exploring to improve the operation to run left turn from Marsh Lane in a new phase when the right turn into Marsh Lane is at green, this would run the two busiest approaches within the same stage reducing the cycle time by approximately 30 seconds and improving coordination to stream 1. Reducing the cycle time would improve the operation of the network as a whole as the shorter cycle time would reduce the length of the platoons and would therefore help with the exit blocking, it would also reduce the waiting time for pedestrians and would allow both junctions to operate at a similar cycle time.

The improvements are subject to Local Consultation re: Traffic Regulation Orders that need to be approved before we can begin.
