Outstanding issue with bollards

Reported via iOS in the Roads and Carriageways category anonymously at 08:29, Wed 1 November 2023

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

Thank you for updating, my query that I sent in a year ago. It now looks like you have closed this and you want me to send a new report in. Nothing has changed. The bollards are still an issue. Please look at my previous queryFixMyStreet ref: 3894312. I do not feel like I have to explain myself again when I put everything on first query nothing has changed a year has gone by and no one has even come out to put some reflective labels on the bollards. I think it is quite appalling. I know that you're busy but you have put these bollards up without the second thought to how me and my family access our property. I also have elderly members of my family who are struggling with their health and can't even get on the drive because they're worried that they are going to scrape their car this needs to be sorted out. It is not fair that I'm another year goes past and nothing has been done.

  • The bollards that have been installed by the Developer are to the specification on the approved drawings. These Section 278 highway works have been Road Safety Audited and no concerns were raised in relation to these bollards. We cannot simply remove these bollards as it will compromise the pedestrian safety and will also create parking issues. We do however note your concerns and agree that the current bollards are not the most conspicuous, therefore we have requested for the Developer to install some reflective pads onto the bollards, which will improve the visibility of the bollards.

  • Another accident today as the bollards cannot be seen, this is unacceptable and making it hard for my family to come over without the risk of not seeing a bollard! Someone needs to take some responsibility for the bollards soon, this is now costing £100's of car repairs at our expense which is not fair!

  • Unfortunately today a delivery driver in his car went into the bollard as it was in his bind spot, this caused damage to his rear light. I am no further forward with a solution to how this can be sorted. The reflectors do not help people during the day and cannot see bollard in their blind spots.

My son has lost £500 in money when selling his car due to damage to his bumper. I really at at a loss as to what I can do to fix this issue. It is not fair on us. I understand its a highway issue etc.... but what I have is not a solution for me long term.

  • These bollards are an essential safety feature to protect pedestrians, including significant numbers of children entering and exiting the estate. Having lived here for five years I have never once found the bollards to be problematic and I’ve never once driven into them. The reported issues of vehicles manoeuvering in an unsafe fashion and striking the bollards is ample evidence the bollards are indeed effectively protecting pedestrian space and are absolutely needed. As an aside, I suggest anyone who is unable to see a multitude of 3 feet tall wooden posts when driving should consider whether they require further training to meet the driving standard or should perhaps surrender their license.
