Large horse chestnut tree overhanging road

Reported via desktop in the Trees category anonymously at 12:57, Tuesday 19 September 2023

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later

This tree which is on council land is a major risk to the surrounding houses and to peoples lives, especially in strong winds with a higher likelihood the tree could break and fall.

The tree needs to be professionally removed as it causes damage to vehicles and properties when the conkers fall. Some conkers hit the bin men on the head this morning.

The squashed conkers on the road also cause numerous issues i.e. blocking drains.

When the grounds get icy, these squashed conkers make the ground even worse.

The hedges surrounding the tree have been left in a poor state too.

  • Thank you for your report. I have visited site and assessed the trees in their location. The trees present are on land not deemed to be part of the publicly maintained highway by OCC in our capacity as local highway authority. The trees present are on land maintainable by an adjacent landowner and not by the County Council. You can access the land registry at: https://www.gov.uk/ search-property-information-land-registry to find details of the adjacent landowner to pursue your enquiry. You are also within your common law rights as a landowner to cut any overhanging vegetation back to the boundary line of your property.
