Missing signage and contractor's barriers force cyclists into main carriageway

Reported via Android in the Current Roadworks category by Dick Wolff at 17:22, Tuesday 12 September 2023

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

This relates to my other post about dangerous and unnecessary contractor's barrier on the north side of the A44. Cycling north on Sustrans Route 5 along the canal you are signed off (as has always been the case) to the left just before the A44 road bridge. This now leads to a lovely new, wide tarmac cycle path/roadway 5m wide along the south side of the A44 and separated from the A44 by a barrier. About 300m further along you meet a barrier completely blocking the path - with no prior warning. By backtracking 50m or so it is possible to join the main motorised traffic at right angles and then continue past the roadworks - a dangerous exercise at night because it is not lit. Even if it were signed properly and you continued along the canal under the bridge and cycled up the new ramp to join the cycle lane on the north side, you would meet the unnecessary barrier they have erected across that path as well and be forced to join the main carriageway by crossing oncoming traffic first.

The site supervisor of these works has given absolutely no thought to how cyclists are supposed to navigate them, and in the process has created completely unnecessary and serious danger for cyclists. (See also report on north side cycle path)
