Dangerous new road system
Reported via mobile in the Trees category anonymously at 18:37, Monday 11 September 2023
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 1 minute later
A priority road chicane which has been installed adjacent to Herman close to restrict the flow of traffic from Steventon is causing a significant safety risk and is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. I witness at least one near-miss a day whilst passing through (several times a day)
If the County Council wish to continue with their obsession with road safety, perhaps they should consider the wider safety implications, such as VISIBILITY.
The trees and bushes need cutting back routinely which would allow drivers on both sides of the chicane to view down the road,to spot oncoming vehicles. Owing to the curve in the road and the 'genius' location that this has been placed, currently the only way to approach the chicane is BLINDLY and its Russian roulette as to whether there is a vehicle coming the other way; which there is, often at speed. There is nowhere to swerve, nowhere to maneuver.

Thank you for your enquiry. Work is programme to cut back vegetation (HATER) from chicane to A338 junction.
With regards the second part of your enquiry about the chicane having safety issues and poorly located.
This has been passed to the Traffic Team to respond.Posted by Oxfordshire County Council at 11:36, Friday 22 September 2023

The priority build out was constructed as part of the approved Martin Grants Homes development at the end of 2019, early 2020. The location was agreed after careful consideration of many different factors, such as the visibility, speed limit, speed of traffic and the location of existing accesses along Steventon Road.
As part of the approval of agreeing the location of the build out there have been 2 independent Road Safety Audit reports, one was carried out on the detailed design and another post construction. The comments on the build out within these reports were resolved to the satisfaction of the Road Safety Auditor and overseeing organisation (Oxfordshire County Council).
In addition to the above, there is a development being constructed adjacent to the Martin Grant Homes development. As part of these S278 highway works, there will be further traffic calming measures being installed in the form of vertical deflection (subject to traffic regulation order approval), which will help reduce speeds along this stretch of the road improving the overall road safety in this location.

Totally agree with the OP. Forcing traffic into the face of oncoming vehicles can't honestly be described as "safe". Add this to the fact that it's located on a bend and you're looking at a disaster waiting to happen. Use speed humps if you need to but please remove this potential deathtrap as well as the one at the Steventon end on the same road.

This is STILL outstanding, almost 2 months since originally reporting. Remind me what we pay extortionate (and ever-inflating) council tax for? Do we really need to get a community group going to do this work like so much else in our faltering society?

This is STILL awaiting completion. The road is STILL dangerous and I am losing my patience. I will be contacting the MP if this is not resolved by the end of the week.
