Post and rail highway fencing
Reported via desktop anonymously at 21:10, Fri 2 June 2023
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council and Vale of White Horse District Council less than a minute later
Fencing opposite No 1 Orchard Road is in a state of collapse. This is allowing children to have easy access to the deep water channel and large silt trap structure. This is clearly very dangerous and needs urgent attention to avoid the possibility of a major incident.

Thank you for your report. I have visited the site you pinpointed on the map, Opposite 1 Orchard Road, Botley, see photos, and assessed the issue you have identified. Unfortunately, after checking our Highway Records maps and the Land registry, I can confirm that the vast majority of this stretch of verge (service strip), where the broken and leaning fencing is, adjacent to the A420 embankment, is not part of the highway network that Oxfordshire County Council is responsible for maintaining at public expense. We only own the footway and carriageway and a narrow of strip of verge (service strip), adjacent to the carriageway/footway, at this location. This land is owned by the Vale of White Horse District Council. You should contact them to pursue this matter.
The boundary fence, itself, was provided, when the A420 road was built to enclose the land opposite 1 Orchard Road, and because it benefits the landowner, becomes their responsibility to maintain/repair etc. Any queries regarding this please contact the Oxfordshire County Council Highway Records team. Web Page: Contact Highway Records | Oxfordshire County Council Phone: 0345 310 1111 Address: Highway Records County Hall New Road Oxford OX1 1ND.
I am therefore closing this report.
I have , however, sent them an email informing them of this matter.
