Poor visibility of oncoming traffic

Reported via desktop in the Bridges category anonymously at 16:42, Friday 3 March 2023

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

It is hard to see traffic coming down the hill going through the restriction. I always leave a gap between my car and the vehicle in front when I have to stop and wait (see 1st photo). The second photo shows that my view of the oncoming is not blocked. I have never seen another driver using my "advanced" technique which makes this set-up unsafe. Maybe a Vehicle Activated Speed sign set to 20mph on each side of the bridge would help

  • A permanent design is being done so comments have been passed on.

  • The rise of the road here makes for poor visibility anyway, but ironically it's often the road signage *itself* which blocks the view of oncoming traffic. If you're seated high up in a roadworks vehicle maybe it's better, but a typical car has trouble. I wonder if it might work better to have the restriction moved sideways so that the southbound side of the road is clear?

  • This bridge is now extremely dangerous for cyclists coming down the hill. Vehicles that should be giving way are pulling out causing me to brake hard to avoid crashing head on. I think the road signage has to be improved, with the growth of trees the last few months the priority sign cannot now be seen (see pics) but the design of this bridge needs to be improved before there is a serious accident. I would suggest creating a purpose built cycle track from the Cherry Tree to Milton Park along the railway line so bikes can avoid Steventon Hill and Milton Interchange altogether. There is now an excellent cycle track from Sutton Courtenay to Milton Park that could be replicated.
