New brighter LED streetlamps are disturbing nesting birds

Reported via desktop in the Other Lighting Issue category anonymously at 12:56, Saturday 25 February 2023

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

Birds moved into the bird box on 8 Coxwell Road about a week ago.

The new more bright street lamps installed yesterday means that its almost daylight at night time. This is disturbing the nesting birds at 8 Coxwell Road. The affected lights are number 10 and number 9.

There are options to change the LED bulb to an equally efficient different colour which is less harmful for Wildlife.

Please could the council adjust the lighting for this Particular nesting site for this season perhaps by turning lights 9 and 10 off in the short term? and more broadly look to specify/ replace amber LED lights which have the same energy efficiency benefits but not the same impact on wildlife.

We have a real issue with biodiversity, we're in the next mass extinction and Coxwell Road has a series of mature trees. This lighting has ruined habitat for birds, insects and other nocturnal urban wildlife. We can have energy efficient and wildlife friendly street lamps.
