Hard to spot mini roundabout

Reported via mobile in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 08:58, Fri 18 November 2022

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

When the road is wet or the sun is shining on it, it’s almost impossible to see the road markings for this roundabout which has been carelessly plonked where a T Junction used to be. Yes there is a small sign saying ‘roundabout’ but it’s so hard to spot you are looking further up the road for it! I’m a good and experienced driver (35years) and in some conditions this is the most obscure ‘roundabout’ I’ve ever come across - and it’s on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road at a spot where several pedestrians have been knocked over and injured/killed.

I’m not saying remove it - but maybe build up the centre, rather than it being a flat painted disc on the road that doesn’t show up half the time?

  • Dear Nikita,

Thank you for raising your concerns regarding the mini roundabout on Charlton Road/Springfield Road. This roundabout forms part of a number of improvement works relating to a Development off Springfield Road. These works are yet to be completed and additional improved illuminated signing is yet to be installed on the approach, which will help warn on coming vehicles of the roundabout ahead. We will chase the Developer to get these installed. Once these works are complete a further Road Safety Audit will take place by independent specialists, to check all road safety concerns have been addressed. When this takes place, I will advise them of your concerns and suggestion of mounding the central white island.

    Kind regards
    Road Agreements Team

  • Hi there, just to reiterate the original notification of this dangerous junction - on three occasions within the last month after travelling east on Charlton Road intending to turn right at the roundabout in to Springfield Road, I have had to make emergency stops because traffic travelling westwards along Charlton Road appeared not to realise there is a roundabout at this junction. Please note that when travelling east towards the roundabout there is lighted signage showing the round about and a give way sign whereas, when travelling westwards towards the roundabout, there is only a roundabout sign with a light that is not working above it! Please resolve quickly or there would well be serious accidents at this site.
