Light too harsh

Reported via desktop in the Other Lighting Issue category anonymously at 17:09, Wed 16 November 2022

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

A couple of months ago a new street light was installed in the walkway next to our house, almost level with the first floor. The light from it is very white and harsh and lights up our garden like a floodlight. We have to leave our bedroom door open so we can hear if our daughters get up or call out, and so light from it gets into our room through the landing window. The effect is to make it feel like it's very early dawn even at midnight. I've heard that even a small amount of light at night can disrupt sleep: our almost 1 year old son, who sleeps in our room, is waking very frequently at the moment. This inevitably affects our energy and mood.

For some reason, a different street light was installed for a few weeks before being changed for this one: it had a soft, orange glow that we quite liked in its own way. Could a return be made to that one, and ideally the street light in the main parking area changed to that too as that light shines into our bedroom from the other side. Virtually no one ever walks these areas at night so I don't think having constant, harsh lighting is creating any benefit in terms of safety.
