  • The County Council do not provide or support the use of road mirrors on the highway. The image they provide can be misleading in terms of vehicle speed and distance giving drivers a false sense of security, potentially leading to vehicles emerging injudiciously.

Mirrors are also prone to vandalism, fogging in poor atmospheric conditions and glare from the sun or car headlights.

If, however, permission is granted by a landowner adjacent to, but off the highway and therefore outside the jurisdiction of the County, a suitable mirror may be erected.

The County could accept no responsibility for a mirror so erected. We do not give permission for a mirror to be erected on an area of highway maintainable at public expense.

In this location the mirror would need to be attached to a building, thereby making the owners of the building responsible for the mirror and any future maintenance repairs or claims.

It is not known who erected this mirror, however, OCC will not be replacing it.
