Cycle path junction unsuitable

Reported via mobile in the Suggested improvements category by Peter Clarke at 21:29, Thu 28 July 2022

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

This new crossing is totally unsuitable for cycles. It mixes cycles with pedestrians. The cycle path across the new entry road has traffic lights and a several stop start right angle turns. Totally unsuitable as a cycle path. To encourage cycling , cycle paths need to be as straight and smooth as possible. We need to slow down cars more than bicycles at junctions. The cycle path should go straight across. With a ramp for the cars so the path stays level for the cycle path. The same problem exists on both sides of the A40. If you don’t get these junctions right cyclists tend to take paths of least resistance eg go on the road. Take examples from Netherlands (eg. Leiden) or Germany ( eg. Erlangen) to see how cycle paths can be made properly.
