Active Travel Scheme Enhancement

Reported via desktop in the Highway Schemes category anonymously at 17:27, Wednesday 27 July 2022

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

Since the new cycle lanes & crossing islands were provided, there are more errant cyclists than ever using the Crown Walk footpath between the Witan Way roundabout & Langdale Gate, especially those heading into town, who appear particularly reluctant to cross over onto the westbound cycle lane of Langdale Gate.

Would you please consider a cycle prohibition for this length of the footpath? It is not particularly wide & because of the walls either side, pedestrians have no refuge space to avoid cyclists & mobility scooters have no passing place. Unambiguous, robust signage & markings should be provided. (Picture 3)

At the very least, could you paint some markings or erect some signs to inform cyclists the route they should be taking at the Witan Way end. The one arrow painted on the path before the roundabout could give some the impression they are on a one-way system and are correct in taking the footpath into town. The tactile paving means little to most people - overt, explicit signage would be more easily understood. & more likely to be complied with. (Picture 1)

"No Cycling" markings or signage would also be welcome at the western end of this section of path. Drivers of vehicles exiting Langdale Hall car park have little chance of seeing a cyclist emerging at speed, neither do patrons of the public toilets, whose view is obstructed in both directions by the stone walls & hedge. This is particularly true for wheelchair users of the disabled toilet & mobility scooter drivers, who are seated at a low level. (Picture 2)

Thank you.

  • What a well put together and descriptive request. I too fully support the original posters comments and request.

  • OP - Perhaps a matter to be raised and discussed at the next meeting of Witney Traffic Advisory Committee on 27th September. https://democracy.witney-tc.gov.uk/ mgCommitteeDetails.aspx?ID=1167

  • I don't usually like railings or hoops across footpaths, but perhaps this is one place where they would be justified?

At the moment, it is just too easy for cyclists & scooters to veer off the eastbound Langdale Gate cycle lane at the Langdale Hall junction & take a short-cut down the Crown Lane footpath at speed.

  • Maybe trial something like this at each end...

Which might be enough of an inconvenience to make it quicker for them to use the correct route?
