Extremely noisy manhole covers

Reported via mobile in the Manhole category anonymously at 09:54, Sunday 15 May 2022

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

This was reported to Thames Water over 2 months ago and as yet they have done nothing. It's about time Oxfordshire County Council gave them a kick up the bum!

For the houses very close to it the sound is like a gunshot, several times a minute at busy periods. It's a very busy road with a 40mph speed limit (frequently ignored) and used by significant numbers of HGVs. Using the garden, or even opening a window, has become impossible unless you wear earplugs or play loud music to attempt to distract from the noise.

On 6/6/22 it will be 3 months since I complained to TW. If nothing has been done by then I plan to write to local and county councillors and Layla Moran (Abingdon MP).

Perhaps Thames Water would do something if more people complained. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking. Complain here... customer.feedback@thameswater.co.uk or here... 0700 0093932

  • This was fixed just over a week ago with a more heavy-duty (so I'm told) pair of manhole covers replacing the previous pair which had been in place for under 1 year.

We are now back to just the normal level of horrendous traffic noise due to the combination of a 40mph speed limit and a noisy road surface.
