Ambiguous road markings

Reported via desktop in the Road Markings category anonymously at 16:46, Sat 26 March 2022

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The new road markings are ambiguous, and therefore unsafe. In particular the road midline is unclear because there is a new cycle lane southbound, but not northbound. The carriageway is not wide enough to sustain large motor vehicles in both directions and the new southbound cycle lane. The meaning of the cycle markings northbound are unclear. It is unclear whether motor vehicles are expected to straddle the southbound cycle lane.

  • Further to this, the tarmac surfacing has a seam in the middle of the road, suggesting this is the midline, but in that case the southbound motor vehicle lane is not wide enough. If the midline is west of the seam, that creates an ambiguity, risking head-on collisions.
