Walking up Crisp Road this afternoon I was entranced by the marvellous new road surface on Hop Gardens. The question is what is the reasoning for this improvement in the infrastructure of Henley-on-Thames? Why Hop Gardens and not Kings Road? The whole surface of Kings Road needs to be recalibrated. The many repairs to services continue to cause numerous faults by different rates of wear and levels. The mini-roundabout is too high so the surface water cannot drain with the volume of water from the side-roads York, Clarence and Mount View. The pedestrian crossing has permanent water at the kerbsides. The pedestrian movement patterns are poorly understood with only one pavement on the far side with one’s back to the vehicular traffic, which includes negotiating a severe pyracantha hedge on the corner of the rise before the roundabout. The pavement is almost one continuous stream of water during wet weather so pedestrians are doomed to the unavoidable spray from passing vehicles as the gullies do not function as they have not been serviced for years. To add to the problem one drain cover lies well below the road level and is a hazard for any cyclist. The road markings are worn out, the signage inappropriate with their position on the kerbside. Why not follow the example by West Oxfordshire? The road sweeper cannot access the road on the side with parked cars, but that shouldn’t preclude the sweeping of the street, admittedly by hand with the appropriate tools. When a quiet road such as Hop Gardens receives the full treatment, why is it that Kings Road has to continue to be the road to perdition.
