Light on all night

The street light adjacent to where I live is very bright and on literally all night. Its so bright the birds constantly sing at night in the garden. Can something be done about this please? Why the need to keep the lights on constantly, when even parts of the motorways are dark for a few hours. This is having a detrimental affect on my health and on the surrounding nature. Please can you turn the lights off at night, even if its just for a few hours, or replace the with something that does not cause so much light pollution
