Massive electronic sign about carparking

Reported via mobile in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category anonymously at 18:45, Fri 26 November 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

A massive electronic sign appeared last week on Botley Road (heading east). The post is placed in the middle of the pedestrian walkway and the sign is low and huge. It is totally inappropriate both in size and placement. The information about car parks is most relevant to drivers BEFORE they pass the park and ride. No point telling drivers that the Westgate car park is full if they have already sat in traffic all the way down Botley Road. Not sure what outcome this sign is intended to achieve. It makes our local community look like a major motorway and does nothing to allieviate traffic on Botley Road that is polluting our air quality and creating a dangerous environment for local residents trying to cycle or walk.

  • The County Council agreed to install this sign as part of several measures to help manage the congestion in and around the Westgate Centre Car Park in particular.

Cars passing the sign will have already driven past Seacourt Park & Ride, and while there is city centre parking capacity, the intention is to get them to a destination as quickly as possible so that they are not driving around different car parks trying to find a space – circulating around the network and creating more congestion and air pollution.

When all the car parks are full (which does happen), as part of the Westgate Car Park closure strategy, it is used to encourage drivers to either turn around as there is nowhere to park or to keep going onto the next P&R site. The sign can also be used for messaging which encourages greater use of public transport, cycling and walking - as do several other signs around the City Centre.

The sign was installed safely and in accordance with national guidelines (e.g. minimum footway widths and height clearances) permitting the safe passage of cyclists and pedestrians. There are also lamp columns in the immediate vicinity to aid visibility.

However, consideration is being given to the siting of the sign and its role in promoting greater use of non-car modes of transport. This position will be kept under review.
