Pedestrian Road Safety B481
Reported via desktop anonymously at 16:24, Thu 21 October 2021
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council and South Oxfordshire District Council less than a minute later
Twice in one week I have been waiting to cross the road on the Bird in Hand (pub) side of the road to cross safely onto the footpath in the Millennium Field and cars (including a postman LGV) coming out of the village (South bound) have cut the corner of the highway to complete their left turn onto the un-named rural road. As marked in the photo, this is the only safe place to wait to cross the road and be able to see down both directions of the B481, and standing here feels like you are at risk of being hit by cars cutting the corner of the highway boundary, Please can you look implement some light touch bollards or planting e.g. hedges to held traffic that reinforce the the highway boundary. This crossing point is already dangerous with the speed at which cars travel down the B481, let alone cars almost hitting you when you are stationary in the only 'safe' spot.

Thank you for your enquiry into the corner near the Bird in Hand Pub, Sonning Common.
From a site inspection it would appear that vehicles do tend to cut the corner in this location. However due to the sharp nature of this corner some longer vehicles or vehicles towing a trailer do need to at least partially cut this corner to make the turn so unfortunately a bollard will not be suitable for this location.
From our records there have been no reported incidents on the B481 in the location indicated in your report within the past 5 years. Therefore we will be unlikely to secure funding for works here on the grounds of safety.
For now a job will be added to the list of proposed work to upgrade the lining in this location. The upgrade consisting of the line markings outside of the Bird in Hand pub being made one solid line. This should enforce the presence of the virtual footway and dissuade road users from cutting the corner. Due to weather conditions and a fully allocated lines maintenance budget for 2021 this work will be added to the 2022 list.
