Bend too narrow to allow large vehicles and cars throug at the same timeh

Reported via desktop in the Roads/highways category anonymously at 12:55, Thursday 30 September 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The bend is too narrow to allow large vehicles (school Buses, Double deckers or lorries) and cars through at the same time. We had to mount the kerb to avoid our car being crushed by an on coming Double decker bus. This is not the first time there has been a near miss here. It's an accident waiting to happen.

  • Dear Shelley Bennett,

The road layout was agreed and approved at planning by South Oxfordshire District Council. The Road Agreements Team technically check and facilitate the works that have been agreed/requested during planning. This scheme has had a stage 3 Road Safety Audit carried out on the new road adjustment/realignment and no concerns were raised regarding the layout/road width in this location. The carriageway lanes are marked at this location, however I will get the Developer to re-fresh these before we sign off the Section 278 works.

Our Site Inspector is due to meet with the Developer in the next couple of weeks; he will raise your concerns with them and will discuss the possibility of carrying out an accident survey.

    Kind regards
    Road Agreements

  • I second this complaint. The angle of the road is extremely poor in real world everyday use, as I have also witnessed many times. All the Council so called checks and approvals are obviously worthless. No one can argue that any new road layout which causes tyre scuff marks against the curb stones, because of poor design, is acceptable! As stated in the previous complaint, a vehicle had to mount the pavement to avoid an accident. What if there had been pedestrians there too! Come on Council admit you got it wrong and put it right before someone gets injured. Also do not just delete this like you have done with other safety complaints regarding the roads, it is not acceptable!

  • I third this, especially if a large vehicle is coming the other way, anyone who doesn’t agree this is an awful design just needs to drive round it with a vehicle coming the other way. The amount of tyre scuffs on the curb should be enough to have it changed.
