Pedestrian crossing timing is not working correctly

Reported via desktop in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category anonymously at 12:49, Tuesday 7 September 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The pelican crossing over Abingdon road at the junction with Oswestry and Chatham roads does not work correctly. The lights take an excessive time to stop the traffic and show green for pedestrians. I have timed the light multiple times when I use the crossing over the last few weeks and the wait time between pressing the button and the green man showing is always in excess of 4 minutes.

  • Thank you for contacting Oxfordshire County Council regarding the Abingdon Rd/Chatham Rd pedestrian crossing.

Due to the crossing being so close to the Weirs Lane junction it is linked to the junction's operation. Therefore, the pedestrian wait times are similar to those found at typical signalled junctions e.g. Abingdon Rd/Old Abingdon Rd. As flows on Abingdon Rd decrease the cycle time at the junction reduces and the wait for the green man decreases. We have checked the operation of the crossing and found it to be working as intended and without any current faults with a maximum wait time of less than 2 minutes.

I hope this gives you an understanding of the issues that affect this crossing and I’m sorry I’m not able to give a more positive response.
