Large sinkhole underneath thin layer of tarmac and pot hole

Reported via desktop in the Pothole category anonymously at 14:21, Thursday 29 July 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

This busy but narrow road has a deepening depression with a 15cm hole.at its centre. On inspection the hole underneath is large (measured with a stick as at least 45cm deep and probably wider in circumference). The tarmac is 'hanging' ie has nothing supporting it. A large lorry could easily cause the surface tarmac to collapse and a deep dangerous hole would be left on a tight bend. It is next to a drain cover. This area frequently floods and is likely that water erosion has occured underneath the road surface.

  • I am another local resident and walk by here on a regular basis. I see that the traffic cones have been nudged aside and some cones have been driven over or tipped over. The traffic will not realize there is a potential sinkhole here and drive over it. I hope there is not a disaster before an expert can assess it, put more safety measures in place to divert the traffic, and specify the actions to fix it. This is a common route for traffic to/from the A34 and a grammar school a short way down the road.

  • Walked by again this morning: Thanks for the barricades around this area and road narrowing warnings for the traffic ! Also see the hole in the road is marked clearly with the red square around.
