Misleading road markings causing incidents

Reported via desktop in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category by Graeme Rolfe at 21:00, Thursday 15 July 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

Approaching the Littlemore roundabout from the north (Cowley Junction) all three lanes have arrows pointing forwards indicating that all lanes can be used to progress forwards towards Heyford Hill roundabout. Last weekend a serious incident occurred because of this and a vehicle was forced off the road and through the safety barrier. This almost happened to be last year. The markings need correcting and duplicating as they are at other local roundabouts.

  • There have also been previous reports regarding this same roundabout area pertaining to the timing of the lights and stopping. The Fix My Street" closed noting timing was within limits. Also,, down played the car accidents, and dangers. This roundabout, traffic on, and leading up to, has been of constant concern. There is too much traffic using this route. From Rose Hill Parade shops/Littlemore Road up to roundabout is constant accidents waiting to happen. Speeding cars, horns honking, cars pulling out quickly from side streets right before roundabout into traffic. Not sure what solution will be made to this obvious problem.

  • Thank you for your enquiry regarding Littlemore Roundabout and the road markings. Of all the roundabouts on the Ring Road this is one of the more straightforward as it has 4 roads joining the roundabout so at each approach vehicles are either going left, straight on or around to go right. With a combination of both the signage, existing line marking and negotiating the roundabout by following the rules / advice within the Highway Code (Rule 184) onwards this should help negotiate this junction.

It is common practice to mark the offside lane of a multi-lane approach to a roundabout with an ‘ahead’ arrow. This is done to deter drivers (particularly foreign) from turning immediately right at the give way line rather than circulating the roundabout to the left. As soon as you enter the roundabout from the offside lane you are presented with a ‘right turn’ arrow on the circulatory carriageway. Also, the offside lane approach is marked with the destination ‘I’ley’, coinciding with the ‘Iffley’ right turn information on the map-type advance direction sign.

Whilst there are no plans to make changes to the road markings at Littlemore roundabout at present we note your concerns and this area will continue to be assessed as part of our routine monitoring.
