Absence of foot/cycle path

Reported via desktop in the Pavements category by Albert Ryan at 21:16, Thursday 22 April 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

I regularly walk and cycle in the local area and use a Tarmac foot and cycle path which runs more or less parallel to Wantage Road in Didcot, near to the Pill Pond site, on Brunel Rise. This path emerges onto the south side of Wantage Road, Didcot almost opposite Slade Road.

At the point where it joins Wantage Road the Tarmac path comes to and abrupt halt at which point pedestrians wishing to head into Didcot then have to walk across a muddy grass verge for about three meters and either cross the busy Wantage Road or, alternatively turn right and continue along the muddy grass verge towards Barleyfields and then a Tarmac path to Didcot Hospital and the Woodlands Medical centre. On Monday 27th January I saw a lady with a pram struggle through the mud as she walked from Barleyfields towards the Pill Pond area on the south side of Wantage Road.

I wonder if the responsible authorities at would consider:

A) Extending the footpath by two or three meters to cross the muddy, grass verge at the point where it joins Wantage Road. I attach a set of photographs of this point, taken in January 2020 and reported to DIDCOT Town Council who passed it to Oxfordshire County Council. I have heard nothing since.

B) At the same point, laying a paved footpath from the same point, towards Barleyfields. This would enable pedestrians wishing to walk to the Woodlands Medical Centre with children and prams do so without having to struggle through the mud in the winter months or in wet weather.

C) At the same point again, can consideration please be given to installing a pedestrian crossing to enable pedestrians and cyclists to make their way safely across Wantage Road?
