Dangerous cycle lane

The painted "cycle lane" on Warneford Lane is dangerous. Why is it directly next to the row of parked cars? If you cycle in it, there's the risk of (1) being doored by somebody getting out of their cars or (2) being close passed by an overtaking car. If you cycle in the middle of the road to avoid these two problems, cars get impatient and start to hassle you. It's insanity that this situation exists! Especially as so much of the road is taken up by parked cars? Why not rip out the parking lanes, give one side to cars and make the other side into a proper, segregated cycle path?

  • Just to second that other person's report, I was cycling on Warneford Lane last week, for the first time in a long while as I don't live in that particular area, cycling South West, from Old Road to Morrell Avenue. I was absolutely shocked at the painted cycle lane. It literally ought to be a no-cycling zone, as it is precisely where the Police, the Highway code, etc, tell us NOT to cycle, i.e. close to parked cars, because sooner or later someone will open a car door. O this road, if you have to swerve out to avoid a suddenly-opened car door, an overtaking car has nowhere to go to avoid you because the lane is so narrow.

    I had to get off my bike and walk. There's just no way I would cycle on that painted 'cycle lane'. It occurred to me that it would actually be much safer to cycle in the opposite lane, against the traffic flow, on the left-hand side of that lane near the central grass verge, as at least then you would see cars coming, would not be in danger of being car-doored by parked cars, and if a car looked like it was not keeping clear it wold be easy and quite safe to jump onto the central grass verge.

    Long-term, I don't know what the solution is, but in the short term, that painted cycle lane is positively dangerous and should be removed while you think about a permanent solution, because its presence will encourage drivers to pass cyclists closer and at higher speed, because they will feel that they are not sharing a lane with cyclists.

    So please, first REMOVE that paint.

    And then think about a longer-term solution, and this time maybe talk to some cyclists? It is shocking that this cycle lane was ever put in that position.

  • Edit: If this painted cycle lane were not there, I would feel reasonably safe cycling on that road. I would of course then cycle a metre or more away from the parked cars, as per normal safe cycling advice, and then cars may have to slow right down to pass me, as it is a narrow lane.

    The reason I would not cycle on that road at all at present, is that the painted cycle lane will inevitably signal to many drivers to expect any bicycles to stay within that painted lane. So a cyclist outside that lane is likely to either be overtaken too close and too fast, or else may be beeped by irritated drivers who think the cyclist should be 'staying in their lane'.

    That's why this painted cycle lane actually makes it more unpleasant, and actually more dangerous to cycle on that road than if it were not thereat all.
