Cycle lane stops short

Reported via desktop in the Road Traffic Signs and Road Markings category anonymously at 17:54, Sunday 17 January 2021

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

The painted cycle lane (coming across the crossroads from the north) stops before there's easy access to the lane on the Slade pavement. It's not easy to cycle straight up next to the lamppost and among pedestrians waiting to cross, and in the dark it's not clear where the next lowered bit of kerb is. It would be better if the painting just went on to the lowered kerb, with clear markings to show where it's safe to ride up.

This problem still exists. I believe it was marked on the plans for The Slade to have a short cycle lane (continuing on from the 'elephants feet) on the road and an arrow on to the stepped path. However this has not been completed leaving a confusing facility, and leaving cyclists exposed to motor traffic overtaking as it accelerates after the traffic lights.

  • When is this going to be solved? Oxford is actively promoting cycling, but is not providing a safe environment for it.

  • The whole junction is badly planned. Cycling from south to north, it's not clear how to move from the cycle track to the right-hand lane (in order to go straight ahead), and at busy times I've had to use the pedestrian crossing rather than try to get across a fast line of cars turning left into Old Road.

  • Can someone from the Council respond to these requests please?
