Dangerous driveway exiting onto highway (MainStreet)

Reported via desktop in the Pavements category anonymously at 19:18, Tuesday 20 October 2020

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council less than a minute later

I want to report an extremely dangerous driveway onto the Main Street in North Newington. It is a new driveway that has been created for Pear Tree Cottage but which is situated just beyond a blind bend, when coming from Shutford into North Newington, along the Shutford Road and just before Main Street. When a vehicle exits the driveway onto Main Street the driver has no visual sight of traffic coming from their right as there is no vision splay. If there was a vision splay they would still not be able to see traffic coming from the right. This is totally against Highways requirements for new exits onto Highways. I very nearly hit a vehicle exiting the driveway today, and had to swerve to miss it - luckily no one was coming the other way. It is only a matter of time before an accident does happen and something needs to be done about. How on earth did Highways allow permission in the first place is beyond me. I look forward to a quick reply - before someone has a serious accident.

  • Thank you for your report. I have visited this location today,12.11.20 and found no safety issues regarding the dropped kerb access belonging to Pear tree cottage. The dropped kerb in this location was approved by our licensing department who would have inspected the location before granting the licence. The application would have also have had to meet set conditions for consent to be issued. Regards
