Merton Street surface in dangerous state of disrepair

Merton Street is cobbled between Oriel College Chapel (Ordnance Survey grid reference SP51660610) and the corner outside nos. 18 and 19 (Ordnance Survey grid reference SP51880614). The cobbles are picturesque but increasingly uneven. Some are loose and there are potholes. This surface is dangerous and urgently needs to be made even and repaired.
However, the cobbles extend for 250 metres and re-laying them all would be costly. Therefore until this repair can be made, a "failed road" warning sign should be installed at the junction with High Street, at Ordnance Survey grid reference SP51910623.
For pedal-cyclists Merton Street (with Oriel Square and Bear Lane) forms a quiet bypass for High Street, avoiding buses and emissions. But the uneven cobbles are a punishing surface that damage bicycle spokes and wheel rims and cause discomfort to riders.
Merton Street is also the only access from east Oxford to Oriel Square, which provides one of the few motorcycle parking bays in central Oxford that is directly accessible from the east. But 250 metres of slippery, uneven and in places loose cobbles are a particular hazard to motorcycles.
The County Council should therefore add motorcycles to the list of vehicles permitted to use the bus gate in High Street outside University College. This would allow motorcycles to reach Oriel Square via King Edward Street, avoiding the dangerous cobbles in Merton Street.
