Cycling on a designated footpath
Reported anonymously at 16:58, Thursday 10 September 2020
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council and West Oxfordshire District Council less than a minute later
The footpath between Newland Mill and Church Lane, Witney continues to be hazardous due to cyclists. The Witney Green Travel Plan has confirmed that this is a footpath and there should be no cycling. Nevertheless it persists, sometimes aggressively, even ... "No Cycling" text-signs need to be fastened to the gates etc to clarify, and to reduce the risks to pedestrians.
Today's examples include: 1: a father and son riding towards a woman - who has to leave the path to get out of their way 2: a family group riding towards a push chair until they realise they have to give way ... 3: a male pushing on through the narrowest section of the pathway ...

Today is Witney's "Car Free Day", promoted by Witney Town Council who recommended people use www. cyclestreet. net. Only problem: this app tells people to cycle down this footpath as a short cut ! Argh ! No wonder regular problems continue ... tho today ONE considerate person DID stop rather than plough on through the pedestrians: thank you, but please get all the others to stop their harassment.

People around here continue to regularly experience problems caused by cyclists thinking they have the right of way: so regularly it's hardly worth trying to report them to get meaningful action. Fortunately there hasn't YET been worse than spilt shopping bags, torn clothing, falls when trying to get out of the way, etc etc but it's only a matter of time before something serious occurs. PLEASE: some "No cycling" signs (for only a few pounds apiece) would at least make it perfectly clear that this is a footpath for PEDESTRIANS first and foremost, and cycling thus would be a breach

Still open, via questionnaire
I have contacted my colleague in the Countryside service with regard to 'Footpath' signs for this location and will look into this matter further. I visited the site today and witnessed a cyclist in this location.

Neighbours keep talking of their experiences with cyclists. Now its slippery wet leaves, mud, grass its challenging to avoid a hit. The majority of aggressors are male.

Have to walk into the mud to get out of the way of whooshing wheels
