Cutting the verge in Sandy Lane, Hatford., Faringdon

I walk along Sandy Lane Hatford, once or twice a week and have done so for many years. It is not a 'beautiful' stretch of road, but serves a purpose and is used by many people for recreation. I like to see how many different wild flowers there are. I walked there on Sunday 28th June and was delighted to find two pyramidal orchids, as well as more mauve scabious and purple knapweed flowers than I have seen before, as well as several other species. I thought the lane was beginning to look quite pretty. However, this morning I was really upset to find that the verges have been cut back. No orchids, and few scabious and knapweed remain. The lane is boring again. I understand that parts of the verge have to be mown for safety reasons, but that does not apply to most of the length of the lane. Surely cutting the verge, except for the really dangerous parts, can be left until the plants have set seed. I would like to know what County council policy is on care of teh roadside verges, and what regard is paid to environmental considerations. Yours sincerely (Ms) J Chesterton 3 Castle Cres.
