In my original notification I incorrectly stated that the pothole was on the westbound side of Botley Road, whereas it was actually on the eastbound side. However, I noticed at once that I had made a mistake and added a note to that effect. It is possible that Oxfordshire County Council's repair department failed to notice this.
In any event, this is merely one unrepaired pothole along a many-potholed stretch of the eastbound carriageway extending for several hundred yards which starts outside the car showroom next to which this particular pothole is located. The potholes are situated in a bus lane, and I believe the damage around the gullies is the result of heavy buses repeatedly crossing over the gratings. I don't think the subsurface bezels of the drain covers on which asphalt is laid to secure them in place are wide enough (and possibly deep enough) to withstand the rocking forces being applied by the bus wheels.
