Section of pavement regularly floods and becomes dangerous due to slimy mud

Reported in the Pavements category by Bill Falkenau (Wantage Town Clerk) at 07:43, Wednesday 15 January 2020

Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 2 minutes later

There is a section of pavement on the eastern side of the A338/A417 route about 30 yards north of the roundabout by the Sainsbury's petrol station that gets flooded whenever there is heavy rain. It is at the bottom of the slope where the pavement starts to level. Following the recent heavy downfalls a 4 metre section of the pavement has become covered with a thick layer of slippery mud. A former councillor has reported that there has been an accident. She advised ".. a staff member of mine rescued an elderly man who had slipped and fallen into the puddle and nearly drowned as he was face down in the puddle and couldn't move because he injured his spine in the fall and is currently paralysed in the hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery over the next few weeks." I have been advised that the problem has been reported to Fix My Street, but cannot find it on here.

The problem of this section of pavement flooding has been going on for years, but it hasn't been covered in so much mud in the past. I travel by almost daily and had observed this.

  • This section of pavement is unsafe for all pedestrians. The alternative to slipping in mud and silt is to balance on the kerb stones (unsafe) or walk in the road (unsafe). This affects all pedestrians but is especially dangerous for the elderly and for school children.
