Traffic on the A415 at peak times
Reported in the Traffic Lights (permanent only) category anonymously at 15:35, Thu 5 December 2019
Sent to Oxfordshire County Council 5 minutes later
At peak times (notably around 8.00-8.30a.m. and 4.30-5.00 p.m. traffic backs up from both the traffic lights at Clifton Hamden and Culham making it impossible to leave the Culham Science Park site where I work - it takes up to an hour just to leave the site on occasions. Could you consider investigating the re-phasing of both sets of lights to let more vehicles exit this stretch of road - even 20 or so more cars leaving on green in both directions would help. This rephasing could be initiated either on a time-of-day basis or a smarter way would be to have some wireless sensors that detected stationary/slow moving traffic some way back from each set of lights that allowed a longer green cycle . I know that there are outline plans for several road improvements in this area including a northern 'by-pass' for Clifton Hamden and a new bridge over the Thames but these are probably years away and I'll be retired by then. Something needs to be done in the very near future. Not only are peoples journey times longer but also their fuel costs and pollution output. I would be interested in following the outcome of this - I have several other ideas regarding traffic management but no formal training - are there committees/bodies that I can be employed by/contribute to? Tweaking the lights just seems a simple, low-cost potential solution which can be reverted to 'as-is' if it doesn't work - it really can't get any worse - can it??

Thank you for recently contacting Oxfordshire County Council regarding the signal junctions at Clifton Hampden and the A415/Tollgate Rd. Both the junctions operate Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation (MOVA) an adaptive form of operation which varies green times depending on traffic flows. Both sites have also been recently re-validated to eek out any improvement in performance. However, during peak times both sets of signal run well over capacity resulting in lengthy queues on the approaches to the junctions. We have checked both sites and found them to be working as intended and without any current faults and we will continue to monitor the operation of the signals.
