Thank you for contacting us over this concern. Give Way markings are generally only provided at Major/Minor road junctions where visibility is below a certain standard which is set by the Department for Transport and on roads with higher speed limit. Alternatively, they can be provided where priorities are not clear.
As the speed limit has been reduced since the Give Way Lines were first installed, the junction was re-assessed following the resurfacing. This revealed that visibility was more than adequate for the type of road and a 20mph speed limit. Also as a simple 'T' junction, any priority should be clear.
According to Rule 170 of the Highway Code drivers should look all around before emerging from a road and not cross or join a road until there is a gap large enough to do this safely.
I appreciate that there are other similar junctions in Oxford with Give Way markings, but many of these were also introduced before their speed limits were reduced to 20mph. We are therefore assessing each one as and when they come up for maintenance.
Additionally providing Give way Markings at all such junctions makes them common place and therefore detracts from their significance at more hazardous locations. Consequently providing them at this junction cannot be justified.State changed to: Investigation complete
